PRO DEMOCRACY Association

 

The Pro-Democracy Association is a non-governmental, non-partisan and non-profit organization based in Armenia. The Association aims to protect and promote human rights and contribute to the process of creating a pluralist democratic society governed by the rule of law. Its members have long standing previous experience in human rights organizations, among them: the Armenian Council for the Defense of Political Prisoners, Justice and Right, Vote Armenia. During the last years the members of the Association have taken part in several trials connected with human rights issues. Among them: Prosecutor's office versus "Golos Armenii Daily" (1994) - defending freedom of speech; Case of "31" (1995-1998) - a political trial in the Supreme Court of Armenia against the leader of the then banned opposition party; Cases of "September 1996" - cases against a number of opposition leaders and activists who challenged the results of 1996 Presidential Elections; Vahan Hovhannisian versus the Central Electoral Committee (1997) - a case of a political prisoner illegally banned from being a candidate in Parliamentary elections; Ashot Manucharian's case in the Constitutional Court of Armenia (1996) - a presidential candidate challenging the results of the Presidential Elections. The members of the Association have published a number of human rights self-help booklets, instruments and several dozens of articles on the same topic both in the Republic of Armenia and in other countries. Some of the members have been participants of different local and international conferences and round tables on human rights issues. The Association, among its other statements and publications has issued its observations: on the Implementation of the UN Convention against Torture by the Republic of Armenia; on the Implementation of the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child by the Republic of Armenia; on the Human Rights Provisions of the Draft Amendments to the Constitution of Armenia. The Association has organized a number of seminars and round-tables on human rights and democracy issues. The Association is cooperating with several international organizations, among them: the Council of Europe Directorate General on Human Rights, International Helsinki Federation for Human Rights, Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law, International Foundation for Election Systems. The Association is associated member of the Human Rights Without Frontiers Belgium organization.
